Folklore 017: Roots That Choose

Emeraldis did not believe the green was passive.

Its forests shifted. Its rivers chose new beds. Colossi moved through living country like ancient thoughts given legs. Settlers learned to build with the land’s permission, or at least without provoking its immediate refusal.

Farmers, druids, gardeners, millers, sprites, and wanderers gathered there. Some sought peace. Others sought truths buried beneath the forests that had consumed older homes.

The journal named roots that choose as both warning and comfort. Nature had reclaimed civilization, but it had also sheltered survivors. The question was never whether people could conquer the green. It was whether the green would allow them to belong.
